isn't it strange and surprising how well our people show up and love us during our most vulnerable seasons? i lost my heart dog of 14 years in early 2023 and while it was brutal, the amount of my people that reached out or sent something or showed up reminded me how much both my Lucy and I were loved by our community.
i'm so sorry that you're now part of the pet grief club. the blessing and curse of a long relationship with a pet is the time you had to build love, but also the tragic reality of an aging body. i don't wish this on anyone. the way grief is experienced seems to vary person to person, so the best advice i can give is to just follow the flow of your own journey. it might come in waves. it might feel like a roller coaster. but doing things like speaking to her when you're moved to, honoring her how you need to is what helped me navigate my way through too.
I have been following you on IG for a couple years now and finally got the Substack bug earlier this year. My heart has been aching for you over these past couple weeks re: Penny. I am so sorry, she seemed like such a sweet girl. I foster dogs, so am prone practicing grief every time one of my pups graduates to their next home. While it’s hard, and heart breaking when I’m out and see other cute pets and their parents, when I feel that ping of missing all my pups, I remember how lucky I have been to be there for them and help them get to be their best selves. You and penny had such a great life together! You gave her so much love and it showed. Looking up to send her messages is a thing, keep doing it! Remember how lucky you both were to love each other!
